Borrachero Tree
The drunken tree, known as the Borrachero tree in Colombia, plays a major role in the novel Fruit of The Drunken Tree. Not only is it mentioned in the title, but it is also rooted in the background throughout the story. In the book, a Borrachero tree sat ominously in the backyard of the Santiago's home. With its hanging fruit and mesmerizing flowers enticing the children to inspect and examine it. However, while Chula and her friends knew little as to why it was hazardous, her mother clearly understood the trees danger and warned the children to not spend much time around it.
The Borrachero tree symbolises how danger can lurk behind the most beautiful things. In the book, one can see how the characters deal with the problems that arise. It also allows the reader to ponder how the friendships displayed, and the lack of trust played a role in how the Fruit of The Drunken Tree ended.
