The borrachero tree or "drunken tree" has been used throughout history for a couple of different purposes. Some of the uses have been positive to society, while others have been fatal and illegal.
Positive Uses
Over the years the uses of the tree have been positive in some ways. For the most part the tree has been turned into a medicine. One of the main medicines that have stemmed from this tree is used to fight asthma. The tree is so deadly that most people only use it externally and are too afraid to ingest it. External uses include the treating of aches and pains, dermatitis, orchitis, arthritis, rheumatism, headaches, infections, and as an anti-inflammatory.

Scopolamine is also known for treating various different gastrointestinal conditions including:

Negative Uses
Although there have been some good uses of the tree, the bad uses definitely weigh out the good ones. The drug in the tree has been turned into a street drug which causes hallucinations and euphoria. One of the worst, if not the wort, uses of the drug is when people can blow it into other people's faces which causes them to be in a zombie-like state.

This zombie-like state leaves a person with no ability to control their actions, which can leave them susceptible to things such as home robberies, organs stolen, rape, and entry into their bank account (Devil's Breath: Why Scopolamine Abuse is so Terrifying, 2019).
