Historical use
Beginning in the early 20th century, doctors would give the drug to woman when they were giving birth, in order to put the women into a state of calm and drowsiness. When noticing that the women would often times answer questions sincerely and openly when they were on it, the drug was then researched further in hopes of it being a potential truth serum. The intense side effects that the doctors observed during this research caused the idea to be written off.
